STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE TESTED IN TENSION AND COMPRESSION
THE TESTING PROCEDURE DESCRIBED PROVIDES THE ENGINEER WITH THE BASIC MATERIAL PROPERTIES REQUIRED FOR A COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN PROCEDURE. THE RESISTANCE TO SHEAR IS NOT OBTAINED AS DIRECT TEST RESULTS, BUT BY PLOTTING A MOHR DIAGRAM IT IS POSSIBLE TO OBTAIN THE ANGLE OF FRICTION AND THE SHEARING RESISTANCE GRAPHICALLY. THE MARSHALL TEST WAS USED AS A CONTROL TEST. THE TENSILE STRESS FOR THE BITUMINOUS MIXES TESTED WAS FOUND TO RANGE BETWEEN 20 AND 30 PSI, WHEREAS THE COMPRESSIVE STRESS WAS FOUND TO RANGE BETWEEN 200 AND 365 PSI. FURTHERMORE, THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURES WERE QUITE SENSITIVE TO ELONGATING DEFORMATIONS. IT WAS FOUND THAT AN ELONGATING DEFORMATION OF 1 INCH IN 60 PRODUCED FAILURE, WHEREAS 1 INCH IN 20 PRODUCED FAILURE IN COMPRESSION. IN OTHER WORDS, THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES IN COMPRESSION ARE THREE TIMES THE ELASTIC PROPERTIES IN TENSION.
