A STATE-OF-THE-ART SURVEY OF REINFORCED ASPHALT PAVING
PREVIOUS RESEARCH AND PRACTICE CONCERNING REINFORCEEMENT OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE ARE REVIEWED. SEVERAL SECTIONS OF HIGHWAY WERE CONSTRUCTED WITH COTTON-FIBER REINFORCEMENT IN THE 1930'S. FOLLOWING THIS, SEVERAL TEST SECTIONS WERE CONSTRUCTED WITH WELDED WIRE REINFORCEMENT PLACED IN THE BITUMINOUS CONCRETE. TEST RESULTS AS WELL AS THOSE INVOLVING ASBESTOS FIBER REINFORCEMENT ARE REVIEWED BRIEFLY. COMMENTS ON PAST EXPERIENCE ARE OFFERED IN LIGHT OF CURRENT TECHNOLOGY. SOME OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF REINFORCEMENT THAT ARE IMPORTANT IN EFFECTING DURABLE COMPOSITE ACTION ARE PRESENTED. CURRENT LABORATORY AND FIELD TESTS INVOLVING POLYESTER-RINFORCED BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES AND EUROPE ARE DESCRIBED. /AUTHOR/
