THE RATIONAL DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS PAVING MIXTURES

THE USE OF THE TRIAXIAL TEST AND THE MOHR DIAGRAM FOR DESIGNING THE STRENGTH OR STABILITY OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES ON A POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH BASIS IS OUTLINED IN QUANTITATIVE TERMS. A METHOD FOR CALCULATING THE AMOUNT OF LATERAL SUPPORT PROVIDED BY THE PAVEMENT MATERIAL ADJACENT TO THE LOADED AREA IS INCLUDED. THE INFLUENCE OF THE VISCOUS RESISTANCE OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES ON THEIR STABILITY IS DESCRIBED. THE EFFECT OF THE FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE BETWEEN PAVEMENT AND TIRE AND BETWEEN PAVEMENT AND BASE ON THE STABILITY OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS IS DISCUSSED. THE INFLUENCE OF BRAKING STRESSES ON THE DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES IS CONSIDERED. STABILITY EQUATIONS AND DESIGN CHARTS ARE INCLUDED. /AUTHOR/
