THE EFFECT OF AGGREGATE CHARACTERISTICS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALT MIXTURES UNDER STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS

THE PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS USED IN PAVEMENTS HAVE AN IMPORTANT BEARING ON THE PAVEMENT BEHAVIOR. MORE INFORMATION IS NEEDED ON THE RESPONSE OF PAVING MATERIALS UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS; HENCE, THIS STUDY WAS UNDERTAKEN TO EVALUATE THE EFFECT OF AGGREGATE CHARACTERISTICS ON THE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALT MIXTURES, USING BOTH STATIC AND REPEATED LOAD TRIAXIAL TESTS. THREE TYPES OF COARSE AGGREGATES WERE USED IN THE STUDY: NATURAL GRAVEL, CRUSHED LIMESTONE, AND SYNTHETIC LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE. THE ASPHALT CONTENTS FOR THE THREE MIXTURES USING THESE AGGREGATES WERE DETERMINED BY THE MARSHALL MIX DESIGN PROCEDURE. THE SPECIMENS FOR TRIAXIAL TESTS (6 IN. IN DIAMETER BY 8 IN. HIGH) WERE MADE WITH A GYRATORY COMPACTOR. THREE LEVELS OF REPEATED AXIAL STRESSES WERE USED IN THE DYNAMIC TRIAXIAL TESTS, AND THREE SPECIMENS OF EACH MIX WERE TESTED AT EACH STRESS LEVEL. THE REPEATED AXIAL LOADS WERE APPLIED BY A HYDRAULICALLY OPERATED TESTING MACHINE WITH THE SPEED OF LOADING AND FREQUENCY OF LOAD AAPLICATIONS CONTROLLED BY TIMER-ACTUATED SOLENOID VALVES. THE INSTANTANEOUS LOAD AND DEFORMATION WERE RECORDED USING ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT, AND CUMULATIVE DEFORMATIONS WERE OBTAINED FROM DIAL GAGES. THE TOTAL, PERMANENT, AND REBOUND DEFORMATIONS WERE NOTED AT PARTICULAR INTERVALS OF LOAD REPETITIONS. THE DYNAMIC MODULUS WAS CALCULATED FROM THE INSTANTANEOUS LOAD- DEFORMATION RECORD. A FEW TESTS WERE ALSO CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE COMPRESSION WAVE VELOCITIES IN THE THREE MATERIALS. THE PROPERTIES OF THE THREE MIXTURES WITH REFERENCE TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AGGREGATES USED IN THE MIXTURES ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL IN THIS PAPER, AND THE CONCLUSIONS ARE REPORTED. THE MAIN CONCLUSION IS THAT THE AGGREGATE SHAPE AND SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALTIC MIXTURES UNDER BOTH STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS. /AUTHOR/
