THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF AGGREGATES AND THEIR ASPHALT ABSORPTION

ABSORPTION OF ASPHALT BY PAVING AGGREGATE IS ONE FACTOR AFFECTING THE QUANTITY OF ASPHALT PRESENT ON THE SURFACE OF THE AGGREGATE AND AVAILABLE AS A BINDER. THE NATURE AND AMOUNT OF ABSORPTION THUS DIRECTLY INFLUENCE BOTH DESIGN (VOIDS CALCULATIONS) AND DURABILITY OF AN ASPHALT PAVING MIXTURE. THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH ABSORPTIVE AGGREGATES IN ASPHALT PAVING MIXTURES ARE: (1) NO STANDARD TESTS OR METHODS ARE AVAILABLE TO EVALUATE AND SPECIFY THE AGGREGATE IN TERMS OF ASPHALT ABSORPTION; (2) LITTLE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF AN AGGREGATE AND ITS ASPHALT ABSORPTION; (3) LITTLE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE ON THE PROPER USE OF ABSORPTIVE AGGREGATES IN ASPHALT PAVING. IN THIS STUDY THREE METHODS OF ASPHALT ABSORPTION MEASUREMENTS (RICE METHOD, IMMERSION METHOD, AND BULK-IMPREGNATED SPECIFIC GRAVITY METHOD) WERE EVALUATED ON EIGHT AGGREGATES OF VARYING ABSORPTIVE CAPACITY AND SIX ASPHALT CEMENTS OF VARYING PENETRATION. CORRELATIONS WERE MADE BETWEEN ASPHALT ABSORPTION AND MINERAL COMPOSITION, POROSITY, PORE-SIZE DISTRIBUTION, WATER ABSORPTION, KEROSENE ABSORPTION AND OIL ABSORPTION. RELATIONSHIPS WERE ALSO ESTABLISHED AMONG THE THREE ASPHALT ABSORPTION METHODS BY REGRESSION ANALYSIS. IT WAS FOUND THAT DOLOMITE CONTENT, TOTAL POROSITY, AND PER CENT PORES LARGER THAN 0.5 MICRONS ARE SIGNIFICANTLY RELATED TO ASPHALT ABSORPTION OF AN AGGREGATE. /AUTHOR/
