THE EFFECT OF ASPHALT PROPERTIES ON THE FATIGUE RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT PAVING MIXTURES
INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED TO DEFINE THOSE ASPHALT PROPERTIES THAT BEST PREDICT THE DURABILITY OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS IN TERMS OF FATIGUE RESISTANCE. ASPHALTS FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT CRUDE SOURCES WERE EXAMINED. LABORATORY- PREPARED ASPHALT CONCRETE SPECIMENS CONTAINING TEST ASPHALTS WERE STORED IN A SAND BED FOR SEVEN MONTHS AT 140F PRIOR TO MEASURING THEIR FATIGUE RESISTANCE UNDER A CONTROLLED STRAIN (OR CONTROLLED DEFLECTION) MODE OF LOADING. A CORRELATION BETWEEN MIXTURE FATIGUE RESISTANCE AND ASPHALT VISCOSITY PROJECTED FROM ROLLING THIN FILM (RTF) AND ORIGINAL ASPHALT DATA PROVES SIGNIFICANT AT ONLY THE 81.3% LEVEL. THIS RELATIVELY LOW SIGNIFICANCE LEVEL EMPHASIZES THE DANGER OF DRAWING CONCLUSIONS ON THE LONG-TERM DURABILITY OF CERTAIN ASPHALTS BASED ON THEIR SHORT-TERM HARDENING CHARACTERISTICS. GOOD CORRELATIONS WERE FOUND BETWEEN RECOVERED ASPHALT PROPERTIES AND MIXTURE FATIGUE RESISTANCE. RECOVERED ASPHALT PENETRATION, ASPHALT VISCOSITY (CALCULATED FROM RECOVERED PENETRATION AND SOFTENING POINT), AND VISCOSITY MEASURED AT A CONSTANT SHEAR RATE PREDICT MIXTURE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR REASONABLY WELL. ALL OF THESE CORRELATIONS ARE SIGNIFICANT AT A LEVEL GREATER THAN 95.0%. VISCOSITY OF RECOVERED ASPHALT MEASURED BY A NEW CONSTANT STRESS TECHNIQUE GIVES A CORRELATION WITH MIXTURE FATIGUE RESISTANCE SIGNIFICANT AT THE 90.0% LEVEL. THREE LABORATORY MICROFILM TESTS DESIGNED TO SIMULATE THE LONG-TERM DURABILITY OF PAVING ASPHALTS WERE EXAMINED FOR THEIR SUITABILITY IN PREDICTING ASPHALT MIXTURE FATIGUE RESISTANCE. A STANDARD EQUATION CAN BE USED TO PREDICT MIXTURE FATIGUE BEHAVIOR FROM ASPHALT PROPERTIES REASONABLY WELL. THE IMPORTANCE OF EVALUATING ACTUAL PAVEMENT STRUCTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS IN TERMS OF APPLICABLE LABORATORY MODES OF FATIGUE LOADING IS EMPHASIZED AS A PREREQUISITE TO THE USE OF THIS FATIGUE RELATIONSHIP. /AUTHOR/
