RELATIONSHIP OF PENETRATION TO VISCOSITY BY BOUNDARY LAYER ANALYSIS

THE BOUNDARY LAYER SOLUTION FOR VISCOUS FLOW THROUGH AN ANNULUS YIELDS AN EXPRESSION FOR TOTAL FORCE WHICH MAY BE PARTITIONED INTO FORCES ACTING ON THE OUTER AND INNER SURFACES. THE FORCE ON THE INNER SURFACE IS ANALOGOUS TO THE FORCE ACTING ON A PENETROMETER NEEDLE (THAT IS, CYLINDER). FLOW OVER THE POINT MAY BE DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF A PARABOLIC SYSTEM AND INCLUDED AS AN ADDITIONAL FORCE. A FORCE BALANCE YIELDS A SOLUTION DIRECTLY RELATING PENETROMETER DISTANCE TIME, AND LOADING MASS TO THE VISCOSITY. THE GENERAL SOLUTION REDUCES TO FORMS WHICH NEGLECT KINETIC EFFECTS. /JM/
