WORKABILITY AND COMPACTION OF ASPHALT MIXES

DETAILS ARE PRESENTED OF A PRELIMINARY LABATORY STUDY ON COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS OF A LIMITED RANGE OF ASPHALT MIXES. EXPERIMENTAL VALUES ARE GIVEN FOR THE PROGRESSIVE COMPACTION OF MATERIAL UNDER SUCCESSIVE BLOWS OF A MARSHALL HAMMER AND AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO INTERPRET THE TRACES QUANTITATIVELY. THE LOAD-DEFORMATION CURVES CAN BE EVALUATED QUANTITATIVELY IN TERMS OF THE AREA CONTAINED BY TRACES, THE RATIO OF THE CONTAINED AREA TO THAT OF A CONFINING FIGURE, OR, MORE READILY, BY A SINGLE POINT ASSESSMENT OF THE DEGREE OF COMPACTION ACHIEVED AFTER A LIMITED NUMBER OF BLOWS. THE THREE INTERPRETATIONS SUGGEST VALUES THAT CONFIRM OBSERVED DIFFERNECES IN THE WORKABILITY OF MIXES PREPARED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF AGGREGATE TYPE, MIX BINDER CONTENT AND MIX COMPACTION TEMPERATURE. /AUTHOR/
