BITUMEN ANTIOXIDANTS

HARDENING OF BITUMEN BY OXIDATION APPEARS TO BE THE MAJOR FACTOR THAT LIMITS THE LIFE OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS. THE EFFECT OF ANTIOXIDANTS HAVE BEEN STUDIED AND APPEARS TO BE PARTICULARLY APPLICABLE TO AUSTRALIAN COUNTRY ROADS BECAUSE THESE AREAS ARE EXPOSED TO HIGH LEVELS OF SOLAR RADIATION WITH HIGH SURFACE TEMPERATURES AND ACCELERATED RATES OF OXIDATION. ZINC DIETHYL DITHIO CARBAMATE WAS FOUND TO BE PARTICULARLY EFFECTIVE IN RETARDING THE HARDENING OF THE ROOFING GRADE OF BITUMEN. SEVERAL ROAD GRADE BITUMENS WERE TREATED WITH THE ANTIOXIDANT, AND THE OXIDATIVE HARDENING UNDER CONDITIONS THAT SIMULATED BOTH SERVICE ON THE ROAD AND HOT-MIX PRODUCTION WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED. SINCE THE ADDITIVE IS COMPARATIVELY LOW IN COST, THE RESPONSE OF THE ANTIOXIDANT WAS ASSESSED TO A WIDE RANGE OF PAVING BITUMENS AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA.
