PRIME COAT IS KEY TO DURABLE ASPHALT ROAD
LIQUID ASPHALT SPRAYED ON TOP OF COMPACTED GRAVEL OR CRUSHED ROCK SERVES AS A BOND BETWEEN THE BASE AND THE TOP ASPHALTIC CONCRETE LAYER. IT ALSO ACTS AS A WATERPROOF BARRIER TO CONTAIN HUMIDITY AND PREVENT CAPILLARY WATER MOVEMENT, THUS HELPING TO PRESERVE THE LAYERS OF THE PAVEMENT. THE MATERIAL MOST GENERALLY USED IS A LIQUID ASPHALT OR ROAD TAR OF LOW VISCOSITY. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT A PRIMER HAVE HIGH PENETRATING PROPERTIES AND LEAVE A HIGH VISCOSITY RESIDUE IN THE VOID SPACES OF THE BASE BEING PRIMED. THIS ARTICLE DISUSSES THE TYPES OF PRIME COATS, SURFACE PREPARATIONS, THE PRIME COAT APPLICATION, AND THE USE OF THE PRESSURE DISTRIBUTOR AS THE KEY MACHINE FOR THE JOB.
