RELATION OF ASPHALT RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES TO PAVEMENT DURABILITY
THE MEASURABLE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALTS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE DURABILITY OF PAVEMENTS WERE TESTED. A WEISSENBERG RHEOGONIOMETER WAS CHOSEN AND MODIFIED TO MEASURE THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES. AN EXTENSIVE LABORATORY TESTING PROGRAM WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE RHEOLOGICAL AND OTHER PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SAMPLES OF ASPHALTS USED DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SERIES OF ROAD SECTIONS. A FIELD INSPECTION OF THE 22 ROAD SECTIONS PROVIDED INFORMATION ON PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE FOR USE IN THE CORRELATION WITH THE LABORATORY DATA ON THE ASPHALTS. TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF AGING, THE UNAGED ASPHALTS AND THE THIN FILM OVEN TEST RESIDUES, AND ASPHALTS EXTRACTED FROM THE ROADS WERE EXAMINED FOR CHANGES IN COMPLEX MODULUS AT 20 DEGREES F AND VISCOSITY AT 140 F. STATE HIGHWAY PERSONNEL EVALUATED EACH ROAD FOR RIDING QUALITY, CRACKING, AND PLASTIC DEFORMATION. INDIVIDUAL ASPHALTS SHOWED DIFFERENCES IN DURABILITY IN THE THIN FILM OVEN TEST AND IN THE MARSHALL SPECIMENS, BUT THESE DIFFERENCES ARE SMALL COMPARED WITH CHANGES THAT OCCURRED IN SOME OF THE ROADS. THERE WAS LITTLE CHANGE IN ASPHALT PROPERTIES WHEN THERE WAS LITTLE CHANGE IN THE ROAD OR WHERE PLASTIC DEFORMATION RATHER THAN CRACKING OCCURRED. LARGE CHANGES IN ASPHALT RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES WERE ASSOCIATED WITH CRACKED ROAD CONDITIONS. AGING CHANGES THE COMPOSITION OF ANY ONE ASPHALT BY A SMALL AMOUNT COMPARED TO THE DIFFERENCES IN COMPOSITION BETWEEN DIFFERENT ASPHALTS. AGING PRODUCES CHANGES IN CONSISTENCY THAT APPEAR TO BE DUE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A GEL STRUCTURE. DATA PRESENTED SHOW THAT: (1) MIX RATIOS, DETERMINED BY RESULTS ON THIN FILM OVEN TEST RESIDUES, CANNOT BE USED TO PREDICT AGE RATIOS, (2) THE AGE RATIOS ARE ALL QUITE ALIKE, AND (3) THE COMPLEX MODULI OF ASPHALTS EXTRACTED FROM AGED MARSHALL SPECIMENS ARE OF THE SAME ORDER OF MAGNITUDE AS THOSE OBTAINED ON ASPHALT EXTRACTED FROM THE ROAD SAMPLES. IT APPEARS THAT ROAD DURABILITY WILL BENEFIT MOST WHEN ASPHALTS ARE USED IN PROPERLY DESIGNED AND COMPACTED MIXES AT FILM THICKNESSES LARGE ENOUGH TO PREVENT THE ACCESS OF AIR AND WATER.
