PREDICTING PERFORMANCE OF PAVEMENTS BY DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS
THE TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES ARE TO DEVELOP A MEANS FOR PREDICTING THE LIFE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS BY THE USE OF DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS ON SELECTED IN-SERVICE PAVEMENTS AND TO DETERMINE WHICH OF THE THREE FACTORS (1) SOIL SUPPORT, (2) TRAFFIC VOLUME, OR (3) AGE HAVE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON THE DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS. A CELL TYPE DESIGN WAS CONSTRUCTED USING THE TERMINAL SERVICEABILITY INDEX OF 2.0 AND 2.5 WHICH ARE USED IN THE PAVEMENT DESIGNS FOR UTAH'S HIGHWAYS. THE THREE FACTORS WERE EACH EVALUATED AT THREE LEVELS IN THE CELL DESIGN, WITH THE LEVELS CONSISTING OF LOW, INTERMEDIATE, AND HIGH NUMERICAL VALUES. THIS CELL DESIGN CONSTITUTED THE METHOD OF INVESTIGATION FOR THIS STUDY WITH THE PROJECTS BEING EVALUATED ACCORDING TO THEIR CELL CHARACTERISTICS. THE DEFLECTION DATA WERE PROCURRED WITH THE DYNAFLECT WHICH WAS DEVELOPED BY LANE-WELLS OF HOUSTON, TEXAS. THE DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS ARE TAKEN IN THE OUTER WHEEL PATH FOR BOTH FALL AND SPRING ANALYSIS. THE HYPOTHESIS WAS FORMED THAT SPRING; FALL DEFLECTIONS WERE THE SAME. THIS HYPOTHESIS WAS REJECTED IN BOTH TEST PATTERNS WITH AN INCREASE OF 18.5% IN SPRING DEFLECTIONS OVER FALL DEFLECTIONS. THE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE SHOWED A SIGNIFICANT DIFFFERENCE IN THE SOIL SUPPORT OR AGE. IT IS THEREFORE, CONCLUDED THAT THE FACTOR OF TRAFFIC HAS THE GREATEST EFFECT ON PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE ACCORDING TO THE ANALYSIS OF DATA ACQUIRED DURING THE FIRST YEAR OF THIS STUDY. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT RESEARCH CONTINUE ON AN ANNUAL BASIS TO ESTABLISH TRENDS THAT WILL ARISE FROM THE EFFECTS OF SOIL SUPPORT, TRAFFIC AND AGE IN PREDICTING PERFORMANCE OF PAVEMENTS BY DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS. /AUTHOR/
