CURRENT RESEARCH ON THE STRUCTURE AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF RUBBER-MODIFIED THERMOPLASTICS

THE RUBBER PARTICLES IN MANY RUBBER-MODIFIED THERMOPLASTICS ARE COMPOSITE IN CHARACTER AND CONTAIN LARGE AMOUNTS OF GLASSY POLYMER IN THE FORM OF DISCRETE PARTICLES. THE EFFECTS OF THIS STRUCTURE UPON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE PARTICLES, AND HENCE UPON THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE COMPOSITE PLASTIC, ARE EXAMINED, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE STRESS CONCENTRATIONS AROUND THE COMPOSITE RUBBER PARTICLES. THESE STRESS CONCENTRATIONS CONTROL THE RATE OF CRAZE FORMATION IN THE GLASSY POLYMER MATRIX. CURRENT RESEARCH ON THE ROLE OF CRAZING IN THE CREEP AND FRACTURE OF RUBBER-MODIFIED PLASTICS IS DISCUSSED, AND AREAS REQUIRING FUTURE STUDY ARE INDICATED. /JM/
