MINIMIZING THE 'OFF-SPEC' PROBLEM
A VISCOMETER, WHICH PERMITS QUICK AND ACCURATE FIELD TESTING OF ASPHALT AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE IS DESCRIBED. USE OF THE VISCOMETER IS MOST READILY APPLICABLE TO ASPHALTS GRADED BY VISCOSITY. TEMPERATURE-VISCOSITY CURVES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED SO THAT WHEN TEMPERATURE AND VISCOSITY OF LIQUID ASPHALTS ARE KNOWN, THE TOLERANCE FOR SPECIFICATION COMPLIANCE CAN BE QUICKLY DETERMINED. THE VISCOMETER CAN ALSO BE USED TO TEST ASPHALT CEMENTS.
