USING ITOS (IMPROVED TIROS OPERATIONAL SATELLITE) VIDICON AND SCANNING RADIOMETER DATA FOR GREAT LAKES ICE ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The objective of this study was to evaluate Improved Tiros Operational Satellites data uses. Data analyzed for user needs included visible and IR imagery of ice, and temperature measurements of ice and water surfaces. It was found that there is a distinct, useful role that the environmental satellite can serve in monitoring of ice and surface water temperature of the Great Lakes. Some system limitations of ITOS affected performance adversely. The primary satellite sensor for ice feature interpretation was the automatic picture transmission. The primary value of the scanning radiometer infrared radiation is its role of providing back-up imagery to the APT. Finally it was noted that good 'ground truth' was lacking to assess ITOS performance properly.
