SOME ASPECTS OF SKID RESISTANCE OF HIGHWAY AND BRIDGE DECK SURFACES
THE SKIDDING ACCIDENTS ON WET PAVEMENTS ARE A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR TO THE TRAFFIC HIGHWAY ACCIDENT RECORD. THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO TYPES OF SKIDDING THAT CAUSE CONCERN. THESE TYPES ARE CALLED DYNAMIC HYDROPLANING AND VISCUOUS SKIDDING. DYNAMIC HYDROPLANING MEANS A PHENOMENON WHEREBY UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS OF SPEED, TIRE TREAD AND TIRE PRESSURE, AND WITH A CONTINUOUS FILM OF WATER ON THE ROADWAY SURFACE, THE TIRES OF AN AUTOMOBILE WILL RISE UP ONTO THE FILM OF WATER AND LOSE ALL CONTACT WITH THE PAVEMENT SURFACE. THE FRICTIONAL RESISTANCE IS LOST BETWEEN THE TIRE AND THE PAVEMENT AND ALL LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL RESULTS. VISCUOUS SKIDDING IS THAT WHICH TAKES PLACE ON A DAMP OR WET SURFACE, BUT WHERE SOME DEGREE OF CONTACT BETWEEN THE TIRE AND THE PAVEMENT IS MAINTAINED. TEST METHODS FROM MEASURING VISCUOUS SKIDDING ARE DISCUSSED. THE STANDARD TEST PRODEDURE REQUIRES THE MEASUREMENT OF SKID RESISTANCE OR COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION TO BE MADE AT 40 MILES PER HOUR, UNIFORM SPEED, WITH THE TRAILER WHEEL IN A LOCKED POSITION, USING THE TOWED, 2-WHEEL SKID TRAILER TYPE AS APPROVED AND DESCRIBED IN ASTM E 274-65T. SOME STATE HIGHWAY PATROLS USE THE PANIC STOP TECHNIQUE IN ESTIMATING THE SKID RESISTANCE OF PAVEMENT SURFACES. THE BRITISH PORTABLE PENDULUM DEVICE IS USED IN MANY REGIONS. RESULTS ARE REPORTED OF A REGION-WIDE SKID RESISTANCE SURVEY CONDUCTED IN NEW MEXICO, COLORADO, UTAH AND WYOMING. NEARLY ONE THOUSAND TESTS WERE MADE ON A VARIETY OF PAVEMENT AND BRIDGE DECK TYPES. INDIVIDUAL READINGS BELOW 0.20 WERE RECORDED ON ISOLATED SECTIONS OF SEVERELY BLEEDING PAVEMENTS. SOME OF THE BEST AND THE POOREST READINGS WERE OBTAINED ON CHIP SEALED SURFACES. WHEN THE CHIPS STUCK, THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION APPROACHED 0.70. LOW COEFFICIENTS OF FRICTION WERE FOUND ON RICH, HOT MIXED SAND SEALS USED AS THIN OVERLAYS ON VIADUCT AND BRIDGE DECKS. AVERAGE COEFFICIENTS FOR EACH GENERAL SURFACE TYPE MEASURED ARE PRESENTED. SURFACE PROPERTIES ALONE GOVERN THE SKID RESISTANCE OF THE PAVEMENT SURFACE. PLANT MIX SEALS HAVE THE PROPERTIES REQUIRED FOR EFFECTIVE SKID RESISTANCE. IN ADDITION TO HAVING GENERALLY HIGH RESISTANCE TO VISCUOUS SKIDDING, THE OPEN-GRADED PLANT MIX SEAL MINIMIZES THE POSSIBILITY FOR HYDROPLANING SINCE THIS TYPE SURFACE IS NOT SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE RETENTION OF THICK FILMS OF WATER. PAVEMENT GROOVING ON RIGID PAVEMENT SEEMS TO EFFECTIVELY REDUCE WET WEATHER ACCIDENTS. BEFORE AND AFTER RESULTS ARE REPORTED ON SEVEN DIFFERENT GROOVING PROJECTS. HOWEVER, IT APPEARS THAT GROOVING GREATLY INCREASES RESISTANCE TO HYDROPLANING, BUT DOES NOT PROPORTIONALLY INCREASE RESISTANCE TO VISCUOUS SKIDDING. FEDERAL-AID FUNDS ARE AVAILABLE THROUGH THE BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS TO IMPROVE SKID RESISTANCE QUALITIES OF EXISTING PAVEMENTS ON THE FEDERAL-AID SYSTEM.
