COMPACTION CONTROL OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE BY AIR PERMEABILITY MEASUREMENT
IN RECENT YEARS THE USE OF CRUSHED STONE FINES TO TAKE THE PLACE OF SOME NATURAL QUARTZ SAND HAS INCREASED IN BITUMINOUS CONCRETE WORK. SUCH MIXES OF CRUSHED MATERIALS ARE HARSHER AND MORE DIFFICULT TO COMPACT THAN THOSE CONTAINING PREDOMINANTLY NATURAL SAND FINES. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE PHYSICAL CONSEQUENCES OF THESE CHANGES WAS UNDERTAKEN AND HAD AS ITS DUAL OBJECTIVES: (1) THE DETERMINATION OF RATIONAL STANDARDS OF COMPACTION OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE, AND (2) THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RELIABLE SYSTEM OF COMPACTION OR DENSITY CONTROL. DATA ARE PRESENTED FROM SEVERAL HUNDRED DENSITY MEASUREMENTS ON CORES TAKEN FROM COMPACTED BITUMINOUS CONCRETE OF ALL TYPES USED BY THE COUNTRY ROADS BOARD WHICH INDICATE THAT CONVENTIONAL STANDARDS OF COMPACTION ARE RARELY ACHIEVED. EXPERIMENTAL WORK IS DESCRIBED WHICH LED TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF USEFUL EQUATIONS RELATING THE IN-SITU AIR PERMEABILITY OF FRESHLY ROLLED BITUMINOUS CONCRETE WITH THE VOID CONTENT OF CORES TAKEN AFTER COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION ROLLING. GOOD AGREEMENT BETWEEN PREDICTED AND LABORATORY MEASURED VOID CONTENTS HAS BEEN OBTAINED. THESE EQUATIONS HAVE BEEN COMBINED IN A SEQUENTIAL SAMPLING SCHEME TO FORM A SIMPLE SYSTEM OF COMPACTION CONTROL WHICH IS BASED ON STATISTICAL PRINCIPLES. /RRL/A/
