BITUMEN ATTACK BY MICRO ORGANISMS

THE ATTACK ON BITUMEN BY MICROORGANISMS IS DESCRIBED AND THE INFLUENCE OF THE NATURE OF THE BACTERIA AND THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE BITUMEN IS STRESSED. TESTS CARRIED OUT ON BURIED BIRCH TONGUE BLADES COATED WITH BITUMEN SHOW THAT THE MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE SOIL IS A CRITICAL FACTOR. THE ATTACK TAKES PLACE ON THE SURFACE AND IS MORE NOTICEABLE IN THE LABORATORY WHERE THE BITUMEN COATING IS THINNER. A VISIBLE ALTERATION OF THE BITUMEN OCCURS TOGETHER WITH A CHANGE IN THE RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES, ESPECIALLY AN INCREASE IN VISCOSITY ACCORDING TO THE BACTERIA PRESENT. TO DETERMINE THE COMPONENTS OF BITUMEN UTILIZED BY MICROORGANISMS, THREE BITUMENS WERE FRACTIONATED AND THE ACTION OF TWO BACTERIA WAS STUDIED. THE RESULTS OF THIS ANALYSIS ARE GIVEN. /LCPC/RRL/
