THE PREPARATION OF TRINIDAD ASPHALT FOR BUILDING SITES (IN GERMAN)

TRINIDAD ASPHALT IS A NATURAL MIXTURE OF LAVA ASHES AND NATURAL BITUMEN, FROM LAKE TRINIDAD. IT IS USED AS AN ADDITIVE IN SMALL AMOUNTS TO GUSSASPHALT, AND, MORE RECENTLY, TO ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXTURES ALSO. HITHERTO, MIX DESIGN HAS BEEN ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT. PACKING AGENTS, PROPOSALS FOR THE CORRECT AMOUNTS TO BE ADDED, AND SOURCES OF ERROR IN MIXING, ARE REPORTED IN THIS CONTRIBUTION. ACCORDING TO A COMMUNICATION FROM THE AUTHOR, THE BEST METHOD USED HITHERTO IS THE USE OF "TRINIDAD Z", WHICH IS OFFERED IN PLASTIC BAGS BY THE TRINIDAD COMPANY. THIS MATERIAL IS FINE-GRAINED, CRUSHED IN SPLINTERS, AND IS PREVENTED FROM COALESCING OR FUSING TOGETHER IN THE BAGS BY A SPECIAL PROCESS, SO THAT IT CAN BE STORED FOR LONG PERIODS. THE BAGS (ABOUT 20 KG. IN WEIGHT) ARE THROWN UNOPENED INTO THE MIXER. THE BAG MATERIAL EVAPORATES IN THE GUSSASPHALT AND THE MASS OF SPLINTERS HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BECOME ENTIRELY AND UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED IN A FEW MINUTES. THE QUALITY OF THE GUSSASPHALT SHOULD BE GUARANTEED BY THIS METHOD. /FG/RRL/
