THE POLISHING OF ROAD STONES ON A DRUM APPARATUS

THE POLISHING OF ROAD STONES IS A SLOW PROCESS, AFFECTED BY TRAFFIC DENSITY AND PASSENGER CAR-TRUCK RATIO, TIRE SLIP AND SLIP DIRECTION, POLISHING AGENT COMPOSITION, AND PRECIPITATION HISTORY. THE MONITORING OF THE POLISHING PROCESS BY SKID TESTS IS INFLUENCED BY THE LATERAL POSITION OF THE TEST WHEEL PATH WITHIN THE WHEEL TRACK, SEASON AND TEMPERATURE. THIS LACK OF CONTROL OVER THE POLISHING AND TEST CONDITIONS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DRUM TYPE LABORATORY POLISHING APPARATUS. THE DRUM POLISHING APPARATUS AVOIDS SOME OF THE DISADVANTAGES OF OTHER LABORATORY POLISHING METHODS BY PERMITTING A HIGH NUMBER OF PASSES, USING A ROLLING PASSENGER CAR TIRE AS A LAPPING MEANS, AND BY INCORPORATING A FRICTION TEST METHOD, WHICH DOES NOT REQUIRE REMOVAL OF THE TEST PANELS.
