MEANS FOR MEASURING SURFACE SMOOTHNESS
MEANS FOR EVALUATING SURFACE SMOOTHNESS HAVE APPEARED SO COSTLY, TIME-CONSUMING OR UNRELIABLE TO MOST CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL THAT THESE ENGINEERS ARE USING THE STRAIGHT EDGE TO CONTROL PAVING OPERATIONS. THIS OLD, TIME- HONORED DEVICE IS INEXPENSIVE BUT INADEQUATE FOR CONTROLLING THE PAVING OF SURFACES NEEDED TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF HIGH- SPEED MOTORISTS AND TRUCK DRIVERS. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF CERTAIN DEVICES DESIGNED TO TAKE THE PLACE OF THE STRAIGHTEDGE ARE DISCUSSED IN THIS PAPER AS A PRELUDE TO THE PRESENTATION OF IMPROVEMENTS WHICH HAVE BEEN MADE ON FAMILY OF PAVEMENT SMOOTHNESS MEASURING INSTRUMENTS. OF GREATEST INTEREST MAY BE THE DEVELOPMENT AND DESCRIPTION OF INEXPENSIVE HIGH-SPEED ROUGHOMETERS AND INEXPENSIVE PROFILE RECORDERS FOR USE DURING PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS, ALTHOUGH DETAIL PLANS FOR PHOTOCELL MODIFICATION OF THE CHLOE PROFILOMETER ARE ALSO PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
