SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND VOIDS RELATIONSHIPS IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT MIX DESIGNS
THE USE OF VOIDS CRITERIA HAS BEEN ONE OF THE PRINCIPAL FEATURES OF THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS' METHOD FOR DESIGN AND CONTROL OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS.HOWEVER, CERTAIN LIMITATIONS IN THE USE OF VOIDS CRITERIA HAVE BEEN RECOGNIZED AS A RESULT OF CONTINUING RESEARCH BY THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS. THIS PAPER DISCUSSES THE BASIC PROBLEM OF SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF AGGREGATES FOR USE IN CALCULATING VOIDS IN BITUMINOUS MIXES, THE APPLICATION OF THE CALCULATED VOIDS DATA, AND A NEW APPROACH IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT DESIGN BEING DEVELOPED BY THE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT LABORATORY, SOILS DIVISION, OF THE WATERWAYS EXPERIMENT STATION WHICH MAY ELIMINATE THE NECESSITY FOR VOIDS CALCULATIONS.
