DEVELOPMENT OF A FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE EQUATION

DURING PLANNING FOR A MAJOR NEW YORK STATE INVESTIGATION OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT, NO EXISTING EQUATION FOR PAVEMENT SERVICEABILITY WAS FOUND TO BE SATISFACTORY. ALL SUCH EQUATIONS HAD AT LEAST ONE OF TWO DEFICIENCIES: (1) THEY GAVE TOO LITTLE WEIGHT TO RUTTING, CRACKING, AND PATCHING, OR (2) THEY WERE DERIVED FOR A SPECIFIC PAVEMENT ROUGHNESS DEVICE, THUS RENDERING THEM UNSUITABLE FOR THE NEW YORK ROUGHOMETER. THEREFORE, NEW YORK REVERTED TO THE PROCEDURE USED AT THE AASHO ROAD TEST AND IN THE PURDUE UNIVERSITY CORRELATION STUDY--OBTAINING SUBJECTIVE RATINGS FROM A PANEL OF PERSONS FOR A GROUP OF PAVEMENTS, AND CORRELATING THESE WITH MEASURED VARIABLES TO OBTAIN AN EQUATION. THIRTY-FOUR PANELISTS WERE ASKED TO RATE 19 PAVEMENTS ON A 0-TO-5 SCALE. SEVERAL REGRESSION ANALYSES WERE THEN RUN, AND EQUATIONS OBTAINED WITH VARYING MATHEMATICAL FORMS OF THE MEASURED VARIABLES. THE EQUATION REPRESENTING THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF CORRELATION WAS THEN SELECTED FOR USE IN ANALYZING NEW YORK STATE'S FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. /AUTHOR/
