EFFECTS OF MIXTURE COARSENESS, MIX TEMPERATURES, AND COURSE THICKNESS ON FIELD DENSITY OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE
THE NECESSITY FOR MEASURING AND CONTROLLING FIELD DENSITIES OF BITUMINOUS CONCRETE IS READILY APPARENT TO THOSE WHO HAVE OBSERVED PAVEMENT FAILURE BY LOSS OF AGGREGATE DUE TO FREEZE-THAW RUPTURE, WHERE LOSS OF AGGREGATE HAS RESULTED FROM STRIPPING, AND WHERE INSTABILITY HAS OCCURRED AS A RESULT OF TOTAL OR PARTIAL STRIPPING. MIXTURES DESIGNED TO HAVE THEIR COARSE PARTICLES IN CONTACT AT MAXIMUM DENSENESS, THEREBY UTILIZING AS FAR AS POSSIBLE THE MAXIMUM SHEARING STRENGTH OF THE COARSE PARTICLES, CAN BE CRITICALLY LOW IN DENSENESS AT TIME OF CONSTRUCTION IF FIELD COMPACTIVE EFFORT IS MINIMIZED OR IF A MIXTURE IS USED WHICH REQUIRES MORE THAN THE AMOUNT OF COMPACTIVE EFFORT NORMALLY THOUGHT SUFFICIENT TO ACHIEVE SATISFACTORY DENSENESS. IN THIS REPORT THE WORD COARSENESS WILL EXPRESS THE AMOUNT OF AGGREGATE RETAINED ON A NO. 6 SIEVE. DENSITY WILL HAVE ITS CUSTOMARY MEANING, MASS PER UNIT OF VOLUME. DENSENESS WILL MEAN THE PERCENT OF THEORETICAL MAXIMUM DENSITY.
