SONIC TEST FOR EVALUATION OF STRIPPING RESISTANCE IN COMPACTED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

A LABORATORY STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE USEFULNESS OF THE SONIC TEST IN EVALUATING THE STRIPPING QUALITIES OF COMPACTED BITUMEN-AGGREGATE MIXTURES CONTAINING PENETRATION GRADE ASPHALTS. SONIC TEST RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH THE RESULTS OF TWO OTHER TESTS USING THREE DIFFERENT AGGREGATES, ONE ASPHALT, TWO GRADATIONS, AND WITH OTHER CONDITIONS AS MUCH ALIKE AS POSSIBLE. SONIC TEST RESULTS REVEALED THE STRIPPING QUALITIES OF THE AGGREGATES EMPLOYED AS WELL AS OR BETTER THAN EITHER THE IMMERSION-COMPRESSION TESTS OR THE VISUAL STRIPPING RESISTANCE TESTS. THE SONIC TESTS PERMITTED OBSERVATION OF PROGRESSIVE STRIPPING ON THE SAME BEAM SPECIMENS. A COMPARISON OF STRIPPING QUALITIES FOR DIFFERENT AGGREGATES AND ASPHALTS USING MOLDED BEAM SPECIMENS WAS PERMITTED WITH THE USE OF THE SONIC TEST. THE SONIC TEST APPEARS TO HAVE APPLICATION IN EVALUATING WHETHER THE STRIPPING TENDENCY OF A SPECIFIC AGGREGATE OF BITUMEN MIGHT BE IMPROVED BY THE USE OF ANTI-STRIPPING ADDITIVES. THE COMPACTION PROCEDURE USED IN MOLDING THE BEAM SPECIMENS GAVE DENSITIES COMPARABLE TO THOSE DENSITIES OBTAINED USING THE DOUBLE-PLUNGER METHOD.
