RELATIONSHIP OF MIX DESIGN TO HARDENING
DESIGN VARIABLES THAT HAVE A PROFOUND EFFECT ON PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE AND ON BINDER HARDENING IN BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS ARE REVIEWED. THIN BINDER FILMS, SUCH AS THOSE OBTAINED WHEN THE ASPHALT CONTENT IS 1/2% LOW, MARKEDLY REDUCES THE LIFE OF PAVEMENT. THICKER BINDER FILMS OFFERING INCREASED DURABILITY MAY BE OBTAINED BY HARDER GRADES OF ASPHALT AT THEIR OPTIMUM CONTENTS AS DETERMINED BY FIELD PERFORMANCE. THE MORE OPEN-GRADED AGGREGATES OFFER MORE DURABLE SYSTEMS. VARIATIONS IN PAVEMENT COMPACTION AS INDICATED BY VOID CHANGES AS SMALL AS 1% RESULT IN MARKED HARDENING EFFECTS.
