WATER PERMEABILITY OF ASPHALT CONCRETE SPECIMENS USING BACK- PRESSURE SATURATION
UNDER A RECENTLY COMPLETED STUDY SPONSORED BY THE U.S. NAVAL FACILITIES ENGINEERING COMMAND, A PERMEAMETER FOR DETERMINING THE PERMEABILITY OF ASPHALT CONCRETE SPECIMENS HAS BEEN DEVELOPED USING THE PRINCIPLE OF BACK-PRESSURE SATURATION. THE EQUIPMENT IS CAPABLE OF MEASURING THE COEFFICIENT OF PERMEABILITY UTILIZING EITHER THE FALLING- HEAD METHOD. A CONCISE DESCRIPTION OF THE PERMEAMETER IS PRESENTED TOGETHER WITH PROCEDURES FOR ITS USE. IN ADDITION, AN EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM WAS CONDUCTED WITH THREE PERMEAMETERS FABRICATED TO THE DESIGN STANDARDS DEVELOPED TO ESTABLISH: REPEATABILITY CHARACTERISTICS FOR EACH PERMEAMETER, VARIABILITY BETWEEN THE THREE PERMEAMETERS BY ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE, AND CONFIDENCE INTERVAL OF THE COEFFICIENT OF PERMEABILITY. /AUTHOR/
