SURFACING COURSES - FINLAND

IN FINLAND SURFACINGS ARE SO PROPORTIONED THAT THEY ARE COMPARATIVELY DENSE, WITH SOME 3 PERCENT AS THE INITIAL VALUE FOR THE VOID CONTENT. ATTENTION IS ALSO PAID TO THE MARSHALL STABILITY, WHICH MUST BE SUFFICIENTLY HIGH. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF FILLER MATERIAL (MATERIAL BELOW THE 0.074 MM SIEVE) WAS EXAMINED IN 20 CASES OF ASPHALT CONCRETE SURFACING. IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT THE AMOUNT OF FILLER MATERIAL EXERCISES NO DECISIVE EFFECT UPON THE DENSITY OF SURFACING IF THE SURFACING IS CORRECTLY COMPACTED. NEVERTHELESS, FILLER MATERIAL EXERTS AN EFFECT UPON WEARING RESISTANCE. SAMPLES WERE DRILLED (AT 67 WORKSITES) AND THEIR SAMPLE MEANS CALCULATED FOR EACH WORKSITE. BY ORTHOGONAL REGRESSION ANALYSIS, IT WAS SHOWN THAT CHANGES IN THE MEDIUM COARSE (AT THE 4 MM AND 12 MM SIEVE PASSING VALUES) AGGREGATE LEAD TO CHANGES IN THE SURFACING DENSITY. LABORATORY TESTS CONFIRMED THAT THE OPTIMUM GRADING FOR ASPHALT CONCRETE SURFACING IS AT 0.074 MM 8-12 PASSING PERCENT, AND AT 4 MM 42-46 PASSING PERCENT. THE INFLUENCE OF ADHESION AGENTS ADDED TO BITUMENS DERIVED FROM PARAFFINIC AND NAPHTHENIC CRUDE OILS HAS BEEN STUDIED BY AN IMMERSION- COMPRESSION TEST. ALL THE STUDIED ADHESION AGENTS (MONO-, DI AND POLYAMINES AND FATTY ACIDS) CLEARLY IMPROVED THE WATER RESISTANCE OF ASPHALT MIXTURES. IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT PARAFFINIC BITUMENS HAVE POORER ADHESIVE PROPERTIES THAN NAPHTHENIC BITUMENS, WHEREAS THE AGING PROPERTIES OF THE FORMER ARE SUPERIOR TO THOSE OF THE LATTER BITUMENS. THE RELATIVE INFLUENCE OF THE ADHESION AGENTS WAS GREATER WITH THE PARAFFINIC BITUMENS THAN WITH THE NAPHTHENIC BITUMENS. /AUTHOR/
