ASPECTS OF THE BENDING STRENGTH OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE
EXPLORATORY WORK WAS INITIATED TO OBSERVE THE EFFECTS OF ASPHALT VISCOSITY ON THE BENDING STRENGTH OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. AN IMPORTANT OBJECTIVE OF THE PROGRAM WAS TO COMPARE THE BENDING STRENGTH OF A PAVING MIXTURE AS OBTAINED FROM A STATIC LOADING TO ITS STRENGTH UNDER REPEATED FLEXURAL LOADS (FATIGUE STRENGTH). EXCELLENT CORRELATION WAS FOUND BETWEEN THE RESISTANCE TO STATIC BENDING (MODIFIED COHESIOMETER VALUE) AND THE VISCOSITY OF THE RECOVERED ASPHALT. PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED FOR OBTAINING CHARACTERIZING NUMBERS FROM THE MODIFIED COHESIOMETER TEST AND FROM THE DEFLECTOMETER TEST. DATA ARE PRESENTED TO SHOW STATIC BENDING STRENGTH AND VISCOSITY OF RECOVERED ASPHALT FOR ASPHALTIC PAVEMENT SURFACES IN TEXAS. /AUTHOR/
