BEAM FLEXURE AND PERMEABILITY TESTING OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENT SAMPLES
DESCRIPTIONS ARE REPORTED OF A BEAM FLEXURE TEST CONDUCTED ON 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 X 8 INCH SPAN BITUMINOUS CONCRETE BEAMS AND A PERMEABILITY TEST CONDUCTED ON 2 X 2 X 2 LAYER DEPTH SPECIMENS SAWED FROM PAVEMENT SAMPLES. OBSERVATIONS ARE REPORTED OF APPARENT CORRELATIONS OF FLEXURE TEST RESULTS WITH PERMEABILITY, VOIDS, PENETRATION OF EXTRACTED ASPHALT CEMENT, AND ACTUAL PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE. THE METHOD OF SAMPLING PAVEMENTS UTILIZING A 12 INCH DIAMOND CORE BIT, AND THE METHOD OF DIVISION OF CORE SAMPLES INTO PORTIONS TO ALLOW SUFFICIENT MATERIAL FOR DENSITIES, EXTRACTIONS, GRADATIONS AND FOR PERMEABILITY AND BEAM FLEXURE SPECIMENS ARE DESCRIBED. THE PERMEABILITY TEST, A UNIDIRECTIONAL TEST UTILIZING THE FALLING HEAD METHOD AND VACUUM SATURATION IS ILLUSTRATED SCHEMATICALLY AND DESCRIBED IN SOME DETAIL. TEST RESULTS FOR A NUMBER OF PAVEMENTS OF SIMILAR MIXTURE DESIGN, BUT OF DIFFERENT AGES AND PERFORMANCE RECORDS, ARE REPORTED AND ANALYZED IN CONCRETE WITH RESULTS OF PENETRATION AND DUCTILITY OF ASPHALT RESIDUE, VOIDS TOTAL MIX, AND WATER PERMEABILITY. PAVEMENT SAMPLES EXHIBITING BRITTLE-ELASTIC FAILURE TRACES REPRESENTED PAVEMENTS IN THE FIELD THAT WERE AGED, CRACKED, AND SHOWED POOR PERFORMANCE, WHILE THOSE PAVEMENTS EXHIBITING DUCTILE PLASTIC FAILURE TRACES REPRESENTED PAVEMENTS IN THE FIELD THAT WERE RELATIVELY UNCRACKED AND SHOWED SATISFACTORY PERFORMANCE DESPITE CHRONOLOGICAL AGE. THE EXCEPTIONS WERE PAVEMENTS THAT EXHIBITED POOR PERFORMANCE IN THE FORM OF SHOVING AND THESE WERE ASSOCIATED WITH EXTREMELY LOW VOIDS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT PAVEMENTS WITH VOIDS LESS THAN 6% ARE IMPERMEABLE AND AGE BETTER THAN HIGHER VOID PAVEMENTS. HOWEVER, WITH PAVEMENTS HAVING VOIDS LESS THAN 3 OR 4% SLIPPERINESS AND SHOVING MAY BECOME DISTRESS FACTORS. THE BEAM FLEXURE TEST DELINEATES PAVEMENTS OF KNOWN GOOD PERFORMANCE TO THOSE OF KNOWN POOR PERFORMANCE THROUGH OBSERVATION OF CURVE FACTORS AND OF MAXIMUM LOAD.
