THE FULL-SCALE REINFORCED CONCRETE EXPERIMENT ON THE GRANTHAM BY-PASS. PERFORMANCE DURING THE FIRST SIX YEARS

THE STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE DURING THE FIRST SIX YEARS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT LAID DURING 1961 AND 1962 ON THE LONDON-EDINBURGH TRUNK ROAD, A.1 AT GRANTHAM, LINCOLNSHIRE IS DESCRIBED. THE ROAD CONSISTS OF ABOUT 10 KM (6 MILES) OF TWO-LANE DUAL CARRIAGEWAY AND COMPRISES 130 EXPERIMENTAL SLABS VARYING IN LENGTH FROM 9 TO 1372 M (30 TO 4500 FT). TOTAL DAILY COMMERCIAL TRAFFIC WAS 4000 VEHICLES PER DAY IN 1965. THE MINIMUM WEIGHT OF REINFORCEMENT, IN RELATION TO THE SPACING OF EXPANSION JOINTS, WHICH WOULD PREVENT UNACCEPTABLE CRACKS IN A CONCRETE ROAD WAS DETERMINED. THE EFFECT ON PERFORMANCE OF THE ROAD OF THE TYPE OF STEEL WIRE USED IN THE REINFORCEMENT, ARRANGEMENT AND DISTRIBUTION OF THE STEEL, SPACING OF CONTRACTION AND WARPING JOINTS IN LONG SLABS, USE OF SLIDING LAYERS BETWEEN THE SLAB AND BASE, AND OMISSION OF ALL JOINTS IN REINFORCED CONCRETE (CONTINUOUS REINFORCEMENT) WAS ALSO DETERMINED. CONCLUSIONS RELATING TO EACH OF THE ABOVE FACTORS HAVE BEEN REACHED. /RRL(A)/
