DYNAMIC TECHNIQUES FOR TESTING PAVEMENT STRUCTURES

TECHNIQUES FOR PREDICTING THE LINEAR ELASTIC BEHAVIOR OF ROAD PAVEMENTS ARE DESCRIBED. THESE TECHNIQUES WHICH PERMIT THE USE OF RELATIVELY SMALL VIBRATIONAL FORCES WERE APPLIED TO ROAD STRUCTURES IN TWO SEPARATE TESTS. FROM THE FIRST TEST THE DYNAMIC SHEAR AND YOUNG'S MODULI IN SITU FOR EACH OF THE ROAD LAYERS WAS DETERMINED BY USING A SIMPLIFIED TECHNIQUE. THE APPLICABILITY OF THIS TEST IS ILLUSTRATED BY RESULTS OBTAINED ON TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROADS. THE SECOND TEST ENABLES AN ASSESSMENT OF THE CONDITION OF THE ROAD BY A DETERMINATION OF ITS DYNAMIC STIFFNESS. TO SHOW THE PRACTICABILITY OF THIS TEST IT WAS APPLIED TO MEASURE THE EFFECT OF TRAFFIC ON A ROAD; TO TEST THE USEFULNESS OF A SLAG AS A BASE MATERIAL AND TO INVESTIGATE AN AIRPORT RUNWAY. IT IS SHOWN THAT AN EVALUATION OF THE ROAD DEFLECTION CAUSED BY AN IMPULSIVE LOAD CAN BE OBTAINED FROM A COMPUTER ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS OF THE SECOND TEST. FINALLY, BY COMBINING THE RESULTS OF THE TWO TESTS IT IS POSSIBLE TO PREDICT THE ROAD DEFLECTIONS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF A MOVING WHEEL LOAD. /RRL(A)/
