BLACK BASE REBUILDS A HIGHWAY ECONOMICALLY

A CRACKED, FORTY-FIVE-YEAR OLD PAVEMENT WITH NUMEROUS BASE FAILURES AND DISPLACEMENTS WAS REBUILT ECONOMICALLY WITH BLACK BASE ASPHALT. A MIXTURE WAS MADE WITH ASPHALT USING A LOW GRADE AGGREGATE WHICH WAS AVAILABLE IN ST. CLAIR COUNTY, MICHIGAN. THE CHICAGO TESTING LABORATORY DETERMINED THE MIX DESIGN WHICH WAS TESTED AS COMPACTED MARSHALL SPECIMENS. TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT ADDED STRENGTH TO THE EXISTING ROADWAY, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A MINIMUM OF 3 INCHES OF THE HOT PLANT BLACK BASE ASPHALT WOULD HAVE TO BE PLACED OVER THE SURFACE ALONG THE CENTERLINE. BECAUSE OF THE EXCESSIVE CROWN ON THE OLD PAVEMENT AND THE ADDITION OF THREE INCHES, SIX TO EIGHT INCHES OF THE MATERIAL COULD BE PLACED ALONG THE WEAK EDGES. TO OBTAIN GOOD RIDING QUALITY THE MATERIAL WAS PLACED IN TWO COURSES. DUE TO THE LOW ASPHALT CEMENT CONTENT OF THE MIX, A ONE AND ONE-HALF INCH BITUMINOUS AGGREGATE MIXTURE CONTAINING 5.5 PERCENT OF ASPHALT WAS PLACED AS A WEARING COURSE. AFTER SIX MONTHS, NO JOINT CRACKS ARE VISIBLE ON THE SURFACE AND THE BLACK BASE ASPHALT APPEARS SATISFACTORY.
