SAND SEALS COST MORE BUT SAVE COUNTY HIGHWAY FUNDS
AN EXPERIMENTAL SECTION OF SAND SEAL WAS CONSTRUCTED ON A BITUMINOUS HIGHWAY. THIS PAVEMENT STAYED DRYER AND REMAINED RELATIVELY FREE OF ICE IN THE WINTER MONTHS, THAN ADJACENT SURFACES WITH CONVENTIONAL SEAL. THE SAND SEAL COSTS MORE BUT RIDING CHARACTERISTICS ARE IMPROVED AND DURABILITY INCREASED. ALL ROADS WILL NOW BE SEALED WITH A HOT-MIX SAND SEAL. THIS APPLICATION HAS ALSO BEEN FOUND EXCELLENT FOR SEALING POZZOLANIC AND CEMENT STABILIZED BASES WHICH HAVE HIGH STRENGTH BUT ARE SUBJECT TO CRACKING.
