EFFECT OF AGING OF ASPHALT ON ITS RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

A LABORATORY STUDY WAS MADE OF THE VARIATION OF THE VISCOSITY OF ASPHALT WITH AGING AND OF THE DEPENDENCE OF CONSISTENCY / AS MEASURED BY VISCOSITY/ ON SHEAR RATE AND TEMPERATURE. FOR THE RANGE OF SHEAR RATES USED, THE ASPHALT, BOTH IN THE AGED AND UNAGED CONDITIONS, SHOWED A PSEUDOPLASTIC RESPONSE. THE RELATIONSHIPS OF SHEAR STRESS TO SHEAR RATE WERE APPROXIMATED BY POWER FORMULAS. AS THE TEMPERATURE WAS RAISED THE MATERIAL BECAME MORE NEWTONIAN. AS THE DEGREE OF AGING WAS INCREASED THE MATERIAL BECAME LESS NEWTONIAN. WHEN THE APPARENT ACTIVATION ENERGY WAS DETERMINED BY USING THE PRINCIPLE OF REDUCED VARIABLES, IT WAS FOUND THAT, AS THE DEGREE OF AGING INCREASED, THE APPARENT ACTIVATION ENERGY DECREASED. THIS SEEMED TO INDICATE THAT THE APPARENT ACTIVATION ENERGY OR ITS VARIATION WITH AGING MAY BE USED AS A MEASURE OF DEGREE OF AGING AND HARDENING OF ASPHALTS. /AUTHOR/
