TIRE FORCES AS FUNCTIONS OF CORNERING AND BRAKING SLIP ON WET ROAD SURFACES

THE MAIN PURPOSE IS TO PRESENT AND DISCUSS EMPIRICAL DATA ON BRAKING AND SIDEWAY FORCES BOTH SEPARATE AND COMBINED, AND ON SELF ALIGNING TORQUE, ALL AS FUNCTIONS OF BRAKING SLIP AND SLIP ANGLE. THE DATA REFERS TO WET ROAD SURFACES ONLY, BUT THE EFFECT OF SUCH FACTORS AS SPEED, ROAD SURFACE TEXTURE, TREAD PATTERN, TREAD RESILIENCE, TIRE CONSTRUCTION AND TIRE WEAR ARE REPORTED. THE TEST VEHICLE RECORDING SYSTEM, DATA EVALUATION AND ANALYSIS ARE DESCRIBED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT A SINGLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE RESULTANT FORCE AND THE RESULTANT SLIP, PARTICULARLY IF THE TRUE SLIP COULD BE ASCERTAINED, MIGHT ACCOUNT FOR THE LARGER PART OF THE VARIATIONS ACTUALLY OBSERVED IN THE WHOLE RANGE OF CONDITIONS FROM PURE BRAKING FORCE THROUGH A COMBINATION OF BRAKING AND SIDEWAY FORCES TO PURE SIDEWAY FORCE. THE IMPORTANCE OF COMBINED BRAKING AND CORNERING TO THE PERFORMANCE OF ANTILOCKING BRAKES IS SHOWN. A THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE STOPPING DISTANCES IMPLIED BY THE BRAKING FORCE DATA UNDER A VARIETY OF BRAKING CONDITIONS, AND STATISTICAL ANALYSES OF THE PURE BRAKING AND PURE SIDEWAY FORCE DATA ARE ALSO INCLUDED. /RRL/A/
