THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE AND THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF ASPHALT
THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE OF ASPHALT IS DEFINED AS THE TEMPERATURE AT WHICH THE RATE OF CHANGE OF SPECIFIC VOLUME WITH RESPECT TO TEMPERATURE UNDERGOES A DISCONTINUITY. THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE IS RECOGNIZED IN POLYMER SCIENCE TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND DEGREE OF POLYMERIZATION OF THE MOLECULE. AN ANALOGOUS RELATIONSHIP IS SUGGESTED FOR ASPHALTS. TESTS ARE PERFORMED TO RELATED MECHANICAL PROPERTIES TO THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE AND IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE GLASS TRANSITION TEMPERATURE CANNOT BE USED ALONE AS A MEASURE OF THE LOW TEMPERATURE CRACK SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE MATERIALS. /CGRA/
