BRIDGE DECK WATERPROOFING AND PAVING- A PANEL DISCUSSION
THE DETERIORATION OF CONCRETE ON BRIDGE DECKS OWING TO THE USE OF DE-ICING SALTS IS SHOWN TO BE A PROBLEM OF SOME MAGNITUDE. SOLUTIONS TO THIS PROBLEM THROUGH THE USE OF WATERPROOFING SURFACE LAYERS ARE DISCUSSED. THE DESCRIBED MATERIALS ARE RUBBER-ASPHALT MASTIC, ASBESTOS MODIFIED ASPHALTIC CONCRETE, BITUMINOUS EMULSION, BUTYL MEMBRANES AND ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR THE MATERIALS AND ATTENTION IS PAID TO THE CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES REQUIRED TO INSURE ADEQUATE WATERPROOFING. IN EACH CASE EMPHASIS IS LAID ON THE NECESSITY FOR CLEANING THE EXISTING DECK SURFACE AND ON THE NECESSITY FOR ACTIVE MEASURES TO INSURE PROPER BOND BETWEEN THE DECK AND THE WATERPROOFING LAYER. /CGRA/
