THE INFLUENCE OF ADDING PORTLAND CEMENT ON THE RESISTANCE TO DEFORMATION OF FLINT-GRAVEL ASPHALT BASECOURSES

A SURVEY OF THE PERFORMANCE OF FLINT-GRAVEL ASPHALT BASECOURSE MATERIAL HAS SHOWN THAT ALTHOUGH THIS MATERIAL IS NORMALLY DENSE AND SUFFICIENTLY STABLE TO RESIST PLASTIC DEFORMATION ON VERY HEAVILY TRAFFICKED ROADS, IT CAN IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES BE SERIOUSLY WEAKENED AS A RESULT OF STRIPPING OF THE BINDER FROM THE AGGREGATE. AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERTAKEN TO ASCERTAIN WHAT EFFECT THE ADDITION OF 3 PER CENT PORTLAND CEMENT AS A FILLER MIGHT HAVE ON THE FLOW PROPERTIES OF THE RESULTING ASPHALT. THIS ADDITION TO THE TWO SERIES OF EXPERIMENTAL ASPHALT BASECOURSE MIXTURES, HAS PROVIDED A RANGE OF SLIGHTLY MORE STABLE MIXTURES WHICH ARE LIKELY TO PROVE SUFFICIENTLY STABLE TO RESIST PLASTIC FLOWS ON HEAVILY-TRAFFICKED ROADS.
