EFFECTS OF ASPHALT VISCOSITY ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE
A STUDY IS REPORTED ON THE EFFECTS OF THE VISCOSITY OF THE BINDER AT MIXING AND COMPACTING TEMPERATURES ON THE MARSHALL STABILITY OF BITUMEN-MINERAL MIXES. THE AGGREGATE WAS CRUSHED PIT GRAVEL CONTAINING LIMESTONE AND IGNEOUS ROCK WITH A LIMESTONE FILLER, AND THE BITUMEN WAS 85-100 PENETRATION GRADE. PROCEDURES AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK ARE DESCRIBED. TEST RESULTS ARE PRESENTED IN GRAPHS AND DISCUSSED. VARIATIONS IN BINDER VISCOSITY AT MIXING AND AT COMPACTION GAVE SIGNIFICENT DIFFERENCES IN MARSHALL STABILITY, FLOW, SPECIFIC GRAVITY, PERCENTAGE OF VOIDS, AND PERCENTAGE OF VOIDS FILLED WITH BITUMEN. VARIATIONS IN FILLER/BITUMEN RATIO BY WEIGHT /1.81 TO 2.38/ ALSO GAVE SIGNIFICENT DIFFERENCES IN TEST VALUES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MIX FOR IDENTICAL COMBINATIONS OF MIXING AND COMPACTING VISCOSITY OF THE BITUMEN.
