INFLUENCE OF STRENGTH ON THE PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE SLABS

THE STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE DURING THE FIRST TWELVE YEARS OF AN EXPERIMENTAL COMCRETE ROAD CONSTRUCTED IN 1955, ON THE LONDON-FISHGUARD TRUNK ROAD A.48, AT LLANGYFELACH, GLAMORGANSHIRE IS DESCRIBED.. THE EXPERIMENTAL LENGTH COMPPRISES 800 YARDS (731.5M) OF 40 FOOT (9.14M) WIDE CARRIAGEWAY DIVIDED INTO 40 SLABS, EACH 120 FEET (36.6M) LONG AND 15 FEET (4.57M) WIDE. SEVEN DIFFERENT CONCRETE MIXES WERE USED, THREE BEING MADE WITH AN IRREGULAR GRAVEL AGGREGATE AND FOUR WITH AN ANGULAR CRUSHED PORPHYRY. THE OBJECT OF THE EXPERIMENT WAS TO ESTABLISH A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE USED AND THE PERFORMANCE OF THE ROAD, AND TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE PERFORMANCE DEPENDED MORE ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OR ON THE FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE. WITH BOTH TYPES OF AGGREGATE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CONCRETE IMPROVED WITH INCREASING STRENGTH BUT THERE WAS NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CORRELATIONS OF PERFORMANCE WITH THE FLEXURAL AND COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS./RRL/A/
