TIRE ROLLING RESISTANCE MEASUREMENTS ON ROAD AND DYNAMOMETER (5.20 X 13, CROSS-PLY TIRE)

ACCURATE PREDICTION OF VEHICLE PERFORMANCE AT THE DESIGN DEPENDS ON A KNOWLEDGE OF TIRE ROLLING RESISTANCE, SINCE THIS FORCE CONSTITUTES THE MAJOR PART OF THE ROAD LOAD OF A CAR TRAVELLING AT STEADY SPEEDS UP TO ABOUT 50 MPH. SINGLE-WHEEL TRAILERS WERE BUILT TO MEASURE ROLLING RESISTANCE DIRECTLY ON TYPICAL ROAD SURFACES. ONE OF THESE TRAILERS HAS NOW BEEN USED FOR MEASURING THE ROLLING RESISTANCE OF A WIDELY-USED CAR TIRE, SUBJECTED TO VARIOUS CONDITIONS OF LOAD AND INFLATION PRESSURE WHILST RUNNING ON A TARMAC ROAD SURFACE. FOR COMPARISON WITH THESE MEASUREMENTS, THE TESTS WERE REPEATED ON A CHASSIS DYNAMOMETER. /RRL/
