THE USE OF GRAVELS FOR BITUMINOUS PAVING MIXTURES
THIS PAPER DESCRIBES AN INVESTIGATION MADE OF THE USE OF ROUND AND CRUSHED GRAVEL WITH NATURAL AND CRUSHED QUARRY SANDS IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. FIVE MIXTURES OF THE VARIOUS MATERIALS WITHIN A DESIGN GRADATION BAND WERE STUDIED. MARSHALL TESTS, TRIAXIAL SHEAR, SPLITTING STRENGTH TESTS AND LABORATORY RUTTING TESTS WERE USED IN THE INVESTIGATION TOGETHER WITH IMMERSION-COMPRESSION AND HYDRAULIC PERMEABILITY TESTS. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN MIXTURE PROPERTIES DETERMINED BY THE VARIOUS METHODS ARE DEVELOPED. A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN MIX PROPERTIES IS SHOWN IN MIXES CONTAINING CRUSHED FINE AGGREGATE. /NAPA/
