EMULSIFIED ASPHALT SLURRY SEAL COATS
THE RESULTS OF A FIELD SURVEY OF 100 SLURRY SEAL COAT PROJECTS EXTENDING OVER A FIVE YEAR PERIOD ARE SUMMARIZED. DATA ARE PRESENTED TO SHOW THAT PROPERLY DESIGNED SLURRY SEAL COATS CAN BE USED AS A SURFACE SEAL, MASS CRACK FILLER, AND AS TEMPORARY WEARING SURFACE TO PROLONG THE LIFE OF A DETERIORATING PAVEMENT IN NEED OF MAJOR RECONSTRUCTION. A LABORATORY DESIGN PROCEDURE FOR SLURRY SEAL COATS, THE WET TRACK ABRASION TEST IS PRESENTED. THE TEST WAS CORRELATED TO FIELD PERFORMANCE BY PERIODICALLY EVALUATION AND PHOTOGRAPHING OVER 100 PROJECTS. SAMPLES OF THE SLURRY MIX WERE REMOVED FROM THE ROADWAY AND THE ASPHALT CONTENT AND AGGREGATE GRADINGS WERE DETERMINED. THE AGGREGATE USED ON THE PROJECT WAS BROUGHT TO THE LABORATORY, AND SLURRY MIXES WERE PREPARED AND TESTED IN THE WET TRACK ABRASION TEST. DATA ARE PRESENTED SHOWING THE CORRELATION OF THE WET TRACK ABRASION TEST TO FIELD PERFORMANCE. DATA ON THE EFFECT OF EMULSIFIED ASPHALT CONTENT AND TYPE, AND THE EFFECT OF AGGREGATE GRADING AND PLASTICITY ON THE WEARING PROPERTIES OF SLURRY SEAL COATS ARE PRESENTED. /NAPA/
