GYRATORY TESTING MACHINE PROCEDURES FOR SELECTING THE DESIGN ASPHALT CONTENT OF PAVING MIXTURES

PAVING MIXES OF CRUSHED ROCK, NATURAL GRAVEL, SAND, LIMESTONE FILLER AND PAVING GRADE ASPHALTS WERE TESTED IN THE GYRATORY COMPACTION MACHINE. WHEN MIXES CONTAINING VARYING ASPHALT CONTENTS WERE COMPACTED WITH A CONSTANT GYRATORY EFFORT, THE ANGLES OF GYRATION RECORDED DURING THE LAST FEW REVOLUTIONS ARE CONSTANT UNTIL A CRITICAL ASPHALT CONTENT IS REACHED, AT, OR ABOVE WHICH ANGLES OF GYRATION INCREASE RAPIDLY. STUDIES INDICATE THE VOIDS IN MINERAL AGGREGATE WERE ESSENTIALLY FILLED WITH ASPHALT AT THE CRITICAL ASPHALT CONTENTS WITH THE AIR VOIDS CONSISTENTLY ONE PER CENT OR LESS. ACCORDING TO ACCEPTED CRITERIA, ACCEPTABLE AIR VOIDS ARE OBTAINED AT ONE PER CENT LESS ASPHALT THAN PER CENT AT THE CRITICAL POINT. DESIGN ASPHALT CONTENTS BY THE GYRATORY METHOD USING 100 PSI, ONE DEGREE ANGLE OF GYRATION, AND 30 REVOLUTIONS AGREE VERY CLOSELY WITH 50 BLOW MARSHALL DESIGN CONTENTS. THE 75 BLOW MARSHALL AND HVEEM DESIGN ASPHALT CONTENTS WERE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME AS THAT BY THE GYRATORY METHOD AT 200 PSI PRESSURE. OTHER VARIABLES SUCH AS TEMPERATURE, SPECIMEN HEIGHT, AND MIX GRADATION WERE STUDIED. /NAPA/
