THE COMPACTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE ON THE ROAD
AN INVESTIGATION OF COMPACTION OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WAS UNDERTAKEN ON CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN 1962 TO COMPARE DIFFERENT ROLLING SEQUENCES AND BOTH STEEL ROLLER AND PNEUMATIC TIRED COMPACTION EQUIPMENT. THE RESULTS REPORTED FOR DIFFERENT ROLLING PATTERNS SHOW THOSE PROVIDING THE MAXIMUM COMPACTION AND SMOOTHNESS. IN ADDITION TO THE COMPACTION EFFECTIVENESS, PROPERTIES OF THE MIX AS MEASURED BY THE MARSHALL TEST WERE RELATED TO THE COMPACTABILITY OF THE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXES. A DIRECT RELATIONSHIP EXPRESSED BY THE FUNCTION RELATING FLOW, STABILITY, AND VOIDS WAS FOUND WITH MIXES HAVING A VALUE OF 2.0 OR MORE BEING READILY COMPACTABLE WHILE THOSE HAVING VALUES FOR THE FUNCTION OF LESS THAN 2.0 WERE DIFFICULT TO COMPACT. WHILE THERE WAS A CORRELATION BETWEEN ASPHALT VISCOSITY AT 275 DEGREES F AND STABILITY, NO SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP WAS FOUND BETWEEN VISCOSITY AND COMPACTABILITY OF THE MIXES. IGNEOUS AGGREGATE WAS FOUND TO GIVE MIXES THAT WERE MORE DIFFICULT TO COMPACT THAN THOSE CONTAINING SEDIMENTARY ROCKS . A VERY SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP WAS FOUND TO EXIST BETWEEN MARSHALL FLOW AND ASPHALT VISCOSITY AT 275 DEGREES F BUT NO SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ASPHALT VISCOSITY AND COMPACTION WAS IDENTIFIED. /NAPA/
