A COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR ANALYZING AND RATING BRIDGES
A COMPUTER PROGRAM, AKIN TO PROGRAMS USED IN BRIDGE DESIGN, HAS BEEN WRITTEN UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF AASHO'S "MANUAL FOR MAINTENANCE INSPECTION OF BRIDGES," PUBLISHED IN JUNE 1970. INSTEAD OF USING STRUCTURAL TYPES, WHICH ARE CONSIDERED INADEQUATE FOR RATING PURPOSES, THE PROGRAM EMPLOYS AS ITS TOP LEVEL FOUR CATEGORIES OF BRIDGE CHARACTERISTICS: ARRANGEMENT OF MEMBERS OF VARIOUS TYPES FOR TRANSFERENCE OF VEHICLE LOADS TO THE GROUND, TYPES OF MATERIAL, TYPES OF SECTION, AND TYPES OF SPAN OF EACH OF THE INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS, WHETHER CONTINUOUS OR DISCONTINUOUS. THE SECOND LEVEL OF EACH CATEGORY IS DESCRIBED. LOGIC DIAGRAMS FOR THE COMPUTER PROGRAM ARE PRESENTED. THE ANALYTIC CAPABILITIES OF THE PROGRAM WITH RESPECT TO THE FOUR CATEGORIES OF CHARACTERISTICS ARE DISCUSSED, AND SOME EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN.
