STRESSES IN THE CORNER REGION OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS

A NUMBER OF EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES DESIGNED TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION PATTERN IN THE CORNER REGION OF A CONCRETE PAVEMENT SLAB ARE REPORTED. OBSERVATIONS WERE MADE OF THE STRAINS IN THE TOP SURFACE OF SEVERAL CONCRETE PAVEMENT SLABS CONSTRUCTED UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS ON A SYNTHETIC SUBGRADE. THESE STRAINS WERE MEASURED AT A LARGE NUMBER OF POINTS IN THE REGION OF A CORNER WITH A CIRCULAR-SHAPED LOAD APPLIED AT THE SLAB CORNER. MOST OF THESE STRAIN MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE ALONG THREE AXEX THROUGH THE VARIOUS POINTS, AND THE PRINCIPAL STRESS WAS CALCULATED FROM THESE ROSETTE STRAINS. MEASUREMENTS ALSO WERE MADE OF THE PRESSURE BETWEEN THE SLABS AND THE SUBGRADE, AND OF THE DEFLECTION OF THE SLABS. FROM THESE MEASUREMENTS THE MODULUS OF SUBGRADE REACTION WAS CALCULATED AND INFORMATION CONCERNING ITS MAGNITUDE AND DISTRIBUTION WAS OBTAINED. FOLLOWING THE STRAIN, DEFLECTION, AND SUBGRADE PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS, EACH OF THE CORNERS OF THE SLABS WAS LOADED TO FAILURE UNDER CORNER LOADS. OBSERVATIONS OF THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF BROKEN CORNERS OF ACTUAL PAVEMENTS IN AND NEAR AMES ALSO WERE MADE, AND THESE, TOGETHER WITH THE LABORATORY STRAIN MEASUREMENTS AND STRESS CALCULATIONS, AND THE RESULTS OF THE ARLINGTON TESTS CONDUCTED BY THE U.S. PUBLIC ROADS ADMINISTRATION, HAVE LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RELATIVELY SIMPLE WORKING FORMULA FOR CORNER LOAD STRESSES WHICH IS BELIEVED ADEQUATE FOR DESIGN USE. /AUTHOR/
