SKID RESISTANCE-ITS ROLE IN HIGHWAY SAFETY

CURRENT KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PAVEMENT SKID RESISTANCE IS REVIEWED. IT IS GENERALLY AGREED THAT THE PRINCIPAL FACTOR INFLUENCING THE ULTIMATE SKID RESISTANCE OF A PAVEMENT, ASIDE FROM THE TRAFFIC TO WHICH THE PAVEMENT IS SUBJECTED, IS THE POLISHING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AGGREGATE OR AGGREGATES USED IN THE PAVEMENT SURFACE. ANOTHER CHARACTERISTIC OF A ROADWAY SURFACE WHICH IS CAPABLE OF PLAYING A LARGE ROLE IN THE SKID RESISTANCE OF THAT SURFACE IS ITS TEXTURE. IF A SURFACE HAS A RATHER COARSE MACROTEXTURE, WHICH WOULD RESULT FROM THE USE OF FAIRLY LARGE PARTICLES OF AGGREGATE WITH RELATIVELY LITTLE CHOKING OR FILLING, IT WILL GENERALLY RETAIN A HIGH DEGREE OF SKID RESISTANCE EVEN THOUGH THE AGGREGATE FROM WHICH IT IS CONSTRUCTED IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO EXTENSIVE POLISHING. EXPERIMENTS BY NASA HAVE INDICATED THAT IN THE CASE OF RUNWAYS, WHERE HYDROPLANING MAY BE A SIGNIFICANT PROBLEM, GROOVING OF THE RUNWAYS MAY EFFECTIVELY REDUCE THE PROBABILITY OF THE OCCURRENCE, POSSIBLY BY IMPROVING THE DRAINAGE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RUNWAY. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT SPECIFICATIONS BE ESTABLISHED FOR MINIMUM VALUES FOR PAVEMENT SKID RESISTANCE AND THAT THE VALUE TO BE APPLIED TO ANY PAVEMENT BE BASED UPON THE SKID RESISTANCE DEMAND OF THAT PAVEMENT AS IT IS INFLUENCED BY SUCH THINGS AS TRAFFIC CHARACTERISTICS, GRADE AND ALIGNMENT.
