BUILDING COLUMNS UNDER STRONG EARTHQUAKE EXPOSURE
A COLUMN OF A HYPOTHETICAL 12-STORY REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDING LOCATED IN AN ACTIVE EARTHQUAKE AREA IS ANALYZED IN VIEW OF CURRENT KNOWLEDGE FROM EARTHQUAKE EXPERIENCE AND THE NUCLEAR EXPLOSIVE TEST PROGRAM. THE ANALYSIS IS CONDUCTED WITH PROBABILISTIC CONSIDERATIONS AND PARAMETER STUDIES OF GROUND MOTION, CONCURRENT AND UNI-DIRECTIONAL RESPONSE, VARIOUS DEGREES OF DESIGN REDUCTION OF CANTILEVER OVERTURNING MOMENT, ELASTIC AND AND INELASTIC BEHAVIOR, CHANGES IN COLUMN INFLECTION POINTS, AND VARIATIONS IN ACTUAL COLUMN STRENGTH. PROBABILITIES OF DAMAGE ARE OBTAINED FOR COLUMNS DESIGNED BY USD AND WSD PROCEDURES UNDER SEIMIC CODE REQUIREMENTS AND THEN SUBJECTED TO ESTIMATED STRONG EARTHQUAKE MOTION AS KEY ELEMENTS OF THE BUILDING. /AUTHOR/
